  When talking with customers about battery powered fresh air respirator, we frequently hear two separate questions: “Does this come with a P3 filter?” and “Is this a P100 filter?” Many assume P3 and P100 are interchangeable ratings for the same level of protection. In reality, they belong to two separate certification frameworks, with distinct test protocols and performance definitions. To understand these markings clearly, it helps to first understand how the filter cartridge fits within the full PAPR system. A PAPR itself is a motor-powered air delivery system. Its fan draws ambient air and pushes a continuous flow of air into the headpiece, creating positive pressure to reduce the risk of facepiece leakage. Importantly, the PAPR fan does not filter contaminants. All incoming air must pass through a filter cartridge before reaching the wearer. In short, the papr system delivers airflow and maintains positive pressure, while the filter cartridge captures particulate hazards. The rating of the filter cartridge defines the particulate protection level and the applicable certification regime of the PAPR system. The same PAPR unit falls under a different compliance framework when paired with a filter from another standard.   The P3 filter cartridge follows the European EN 143 standard and represents a high-performance particulate rating within the European respiratory protection system. It requires a minimum filtration efficiency of 99.95% against solid particles and non-oily liquid aerosols. All testing procedures, resistance limits and dust-loading criteria are defined under European requirements. When used on a papr device, the standard evaluates filter resistance under continuous airflow to ensure the blower can sustain the required flow rate over time. Notably, the EN P3 specification does not mandate resistance to oily aerosols, and oil exposure will alter the loading behaviour of the filter media.   The P100 filter cartridge falls under the US NIOSH 42 CFR 84 standard, with a minimum filtration efficiency of 99.97%. Its defining feature is oil resistance: it is certified for both oily and non-oily particulate aerosols. Unlike the P3, the P100 certification requires testing with oily aerosol loading to confirm filtration performance remains stable even as the filter media is exposed to oil. Installed on a PAPR, the P100 filter is engineered around NIOSH test conditions. Its airflow resistance profile differs from that of a P3 filter, which changes the blower load and airflow characteristics of the PAPR. Fundamentally, the difference is not about one being universally superior. P3 is a rating under the EN system, and P100 is a rating under the NIOSH system. They cannot be directly equated. Even though both are high-grade particulate filters, their certification bases, test loads and performance boundaries are independent when integrated into a PAPR.
